It is more important than ever that nonprofit organizations are able to translate their worthy missions into lasting positive impacts for the people and communities they serve, and arguably it has never been more difficult to do so. To help nonprofits address these challenges, the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation and Regional Affiliates (PACF) is bringing national consultant David Grant to the area to provide training for nonprofit staff and board members on Wednesday, November 15, from 9:00 a.m. – noon at the Parkersburg Country Club. The program is co-sponsored by the West Virginia Nonprofit Association (WVNPA) and Nonprofits Lead, a nonprofit capacity building program based at Marietta College.
This interactive workshop, Leadership for Nonprofit Success, will explore how effective nonprofit leaders think about organizational development; measuring success in areas that resist quantification; forming strategic partnerships, building effective boards; overcoming resistance to change; and creating cultures of reflection and learning.
“I heard David Grant speak at the West Virginia Nonprofit Association conference last year and, ever since then, I have been wanting to bring him here to share his expertise,” said Marian Clowes, PACF’s Senior Program Officer. “David’s perspective on the sector, which he re-frames as the “social profit sector,” and his methods for assessing success are impactful. I encourage nonprofit organizations from through the region to attend and to bring a team of staff and board members to get the most out of the workshop.”
David Grant served as President and CEO of the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation in Morristown, New Jersey from 1998 to 2010. Now based in Vermont, he consults with people and organizations around the world that have a social or educational mission. He is a member of the Leap Ambassadors Community, a group of over 150 people nation-wide who support nonprofit leaders in creating high-performance organizations. His book The Social Profit Handbook: The Essential Guide to Setting Goals, Assessing Outcomes, and Achieving Success for Mission-Driven Organizations was published in March 2015.

The Doug McLain Memorial Scholarship Fund was recently created at the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation (PACF) to forever honor the late Douglas E. McLain. McLain was a well-loved Parkersburg native, devout Christian, Air Force veteran, and retired police officer. Above all, he was a dedicated husband, father, and Papaw. McLain unexpectedly passed away on June 24, 2017. Hundreds of friends, family members, and local citizens attended his memorial service to say goodbye to a dedicated local citizen and hardworking public servant.
“Doug McLain was well known as a true servant leader and a man of high integrity,” said the PACF’s Executive Director, Judy Sjostedt. “He lived his life as an example for others. Doug's contributions to public safety and the shaping of young lives through his work as the first Prevention Resource Officer in Wood County, assigned to Parkersburg High School, will be forever remembered with gratitude through this new scholarship. We encourage gifts to help build this memorial for Doug.”
McLain retired after forty-one years of honorable service from the Parkersburg Police Department in 2016. For four decades, while serving on the police force, he was also an EMT for the St. Joseph Ambulance Service. The new scholarship fund, established by McLain’s family and friends, is designed to continue his caring legacy and honor his dedicated service to the Parkersburg region.
The Doug McLain Memorial Scholarship Fund will award annually one scholarship to a graduating senior from either Parkersburg Catholic High School, Parkersburg High School, or Parkersburg South High School who plans to pursue a public service field of study. The fund will make its first scholarship award in spring 2018.
Persons who wish to help honor Doug McLain are encouraged to make a charitable gift to the Doug McLain Memorial Scholarship Fund by mailing a check (payable to “PACF” with the fund name on the memo line) to PACF, PO Box 1762, Parkersburg, WV 26101-1762, or by donating online here. The Ritchie County Community Foundation (RCCF) recently presented a $5,000 grant to the Ritchie County High School Band Boosters to provide assistance with the purchase of new band uniforms. RCCF Advisory Chairman Alan Haught and Advisory Board member Scott Windom presented the check to Band Director James Flesher at the August 7 Band Boosters meeting.
“We were truly blessed and thankful to receive this support for our band uniform project,” said Band Booster President Jennifer Flesher.
RCCF, a regional affiliate of the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation, works with charitable individuals to make a positive and permanent commitment for the future of the county. The grant was made possible through the Ritchie County Community Endowment, a flexible charitable fund that provides resources to meet Ritchie County’s ongoing needs and support its growth.
“This grant award served as a catalyst for the support that we gained in efforts to purchase our band uniforms,” said James Flesher.
